Why Do Our Streets Need to Become Climate-Resilient?

Making active mobility resilient to climate change

Walking and cycling play an essential role in creating healthier, more sustainable cities. However, climate change is increasingly challenging the safety, comfort and reliability of the infrastructure that supports these modes of transport.

Heatwaves, heavy rainfall, flooding and strong winds can affect the quality and accessibility of streets, making walking and cycling less attractive.

How can we design streets that remain safe and attractive despite changing climate conditions?

Streets2030 aims to address this challenge by improving how active travel infrastructure is assessed, planned and implemented. The project combines climate resilience assessment, pilot testing of green and grey infrastructure solutions, and capacity building for local authorities and practitioners.

By bringing together partners with different territorial contexts and expertise, Streets2030 seeks to develop practical approaches that can help cities and regions across North-West Europe prepare their streets for the climate challenges ahead.
